Even with strict regulations, protected areas lost forest to weakened environmental policies under the Bolsonaro regime.

Large infrastructure projects and the severe COVID-19 pandemic could further increase deforestation and forest degradation, according to a new study. Both deforestation and forest degradation had severe potential impacts on biodiversity and carbon stock.
