I’ve been using Cheogram (another Conversations fork that adds features related to telephone dialing and SMS gateways; if you don’t use one of those, it’s probably not super useful and Conversations is a better choice). I think it’s only available on F-Droid, sadly: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.cheogram.android/

@sam @yourliftingfriend
I installed Cheogram yesterday, but i can not find such settings or functions…

Do you already have a bridge setup and hooked up to your account, eg https://jmp.chat? If you go to add a contact, for instance, it will let you add a phone number and automatically append the bridge address (@cheogram.com in this case)

@yourliftingfriend State-of-the-art is Conversations and its many forks. Also aTalk is worth considering for more traditional experience (for example, it does not ignore status description), but it always has some petty annoyances making me go back to C.
I’ve heard good things about Stork IM from creators of Tigase XMPP server, but have not tried it myself. Seems simpler.
Xabber and BombusMod for some dumb reasons decided not to implement OMEMO, so I won’t recommend them.

Conversations or its forks Blabber.im / Monocles chat are the way to go currently.

I am also using the PWA version of Movim which works nicely with Firefox Mobile and does Webpush with the latest dev. version.

Worth keeping an eye out for: https://github.com/PapaTutuWawa/moxxyv2 (But not quite there yet)

On older devices https://yaxim.org/ is also ok, but it doesn’t do e2ee OMEMO.

Yeah Conversations and the forks are great, one of them is the !snikket@community.xmpp.net app for android!

That one works best with your own Snikket server, otherwise I would suggest you stick to the ones mentioned above as they make less assumptions about server capabilities.

ah, makes sense

I use Blabber.im but I never tried anything else.

Matrix clients are really comfortable… and key-management is much better in matrix…

And so many support groups for the fediverse are on matrix…

Key management is much worse with MegaOLM. They basically broke one of the fundamental parts of Signal’s e2ee system by making private keys account and not device specific, which is a serious security issue and which also recently caused an exploit that they tried to downplay a lot.
