Admin reminder to everyone: insulting other users, even so much saying “fuck you”, “fuck [this group of people]” or anything like that while debating IS against the rules of Lemmy.ml. This goes for every political view, you DO NOT get free passes because you’re leftist, rightist, communist, etc. If you’re confident of your position you should be able to debate politely without cursing someone else out.
Check the modlog, we HAVE removed replies of this nature from both sides, and even if we don’t say it every time, we DO keep track of both removals per user and general behaviour even if it doesn’t get removed, and too many infractions WILL result in a ban.
That said, it is NOT against the rules to present countering facts or opinions, or to have political opinions in general. Don’t report comments for “being pro communist” or “being pro China” unless they have broken an actual rule, namely the ones about being civil. Things people disagree with getting down voted is also acceptable, it’s not considered an attack on you if your comment has a negative score, and it doesn’t even significantly affect the ranking because of the relatively low comment volumes currently on Lemmy. It’s just imaginary internet points, relax.
No one. The trolls, spammers, etc get banned instance wide, and I don’t block anyone for being “liberal” or “right wing” or “anticommunist” or whatever because I’m confident in my own ideologies enough to not be afraid to hear differing opinions.
I block any Lemmygrad instance that I see. Fuck them. I came here from Reddit so I wouldn’t get some stupid agenda shoved down my throat. I’m sure that one of the main reasons lemmy is not picking up users at a higher rate is because of lemmygrad. If I have to tell every friend “Yeah it’s quite okay but don’t choose the biggest instance because it’s full of extrem leftiest and communists” that will turn down alot of potential users because they just don’t want to deal with this shit on a daily basis either. Twitter is already bad for creating social media bubbles but this has turned into an unprecedented echo chamber without end.
I block a couple of the highest activity communities from Lemmygrad to stop my front page becoming monotone low-effort junk.
If someone told you to kill yourself, you should report them. That goes way beyond the “be respectful” rule.
PSA: blocking users prevents you from moderating content from those users. You would also have to ban them from any sub you moderate to mitigate this issue

Some people just dont like to have politics shoved down their throat all the time. Is that so hard to understand?
If you’re this displeased with the selection of instances, start your own and make whatever rules you want. That’s the point of an open source platform like Lemmy. No one else owes you a space tailor made for what you want and don’t want to see.

All your fucking posts are political news?

i only have two people blocked, at least one of which has been stirring shit in this thread. i should use the block button more, it seems like 99% of the toxicity on Lemmy comes from 1% of the people
my experience too
Blocking people is equivalent to putting your fingers in your ears and yelling ‘I can’t hear you’. Its quite childish.
You can block spammers etc but that is pointless because they’ll be banned anyway.
Or it’s like my great-grandmother, who used to switch off her hearing aid if someone was boring.
I wish I could do that sometimes.
Plenty of reason to block people who are harming your mental health, or block people because moderation is insufficient. Diminishing the experiences of minorities which are regularly harassed, dehumanized, and suffer from bigotry subtle and direct on the internet is kind of dismissive of their experience.

I think it’s important to join a server that blocks lemmygrad at the very least, and eventually (some day) perhaps even blocks lemmy.ml. The problem with lemmy.ml is that it’s essentially a Trojan horse for lemmygrad, and the admins themselves are consciously involved in this, so a blind eye gets turned to communist trolls and propagandists who are being shepherded in while opposing (humane) viewpoints get censored for political reasons.
As for who specifically is on my block list, I’m not going to shame anyone but so far one person has got on for personally harassing me, and the other is the well known propagandist who also needs no introduction. You’ll see his spam whenever you browse the network.
Personally I’m not a big fan of blocking. I’d rather resolve things at the personal or community level rather than splintering the community into a thousand splinters and everyone getting trapped in their own bubble. I can understand the need for it in extreme cases, and of course that’s a call each user is able to make for themselves.
Trojan horse is very loaded language.
How about to come up with an alternative and helpfully pm at the author?
Why battle about every little thing when you could just help each other?
What does this even mean?

I can agree with this
You literally disregarded 27 million lives to make a pathetic jab, you are the least able to have an opinion on anything “humane”. Communism is humane, and is the most humanitarian force in history.
You’re also just mad you get banned when you’re wrong, and I only get banned when I point it out, while admittedly calling you names for it.
Absolutely no one, I unblock everyone I happen to in about an hour or two. I just need to cool off for a bit.
Welp, suppose you want to promote Lemmy to other people.
Honestly it’s embarrassing to ask each of them to clean their feed from insults, trolling, threats etc, one by one. Simply, not good experience to subject new person to.
The instances help but don’t quite receive a lot of traffic and also benefit the creators only indirectly, so… It’s a solution but I think the user retention is low. Each of instances need a lot more content and people for that.
Also once instance gets popular, it may just be swarmed by trolls again and now you can’t recommend this instance again. So running from the problem is only temporary solution imo
Lemmy is only a few years old, and only started federation for less than half that time. It’s far to early to be talking about instance traffic and retention and stuff like that.
Exactly. Promoting the fediverse/Lemmy has very much to do with learning how to moderate an instance / community.
Repeated bad behaviors should have users banned at some point. And this is way different from censorship (which exclude topics, not bad behaviors). You can’t invite nice interesting (leftist) people on an instance where users are terrifying others with awful stalinist claims and insults. Blocking the awful people for yourself is even worse because you don’t see the shit anymore, but new people will be confronted to it anyway as soon as they arrive. And this can really disgust them from the fediverse.
Great insight!
I feel toxic users here realized that being terrifying to others blocks inflow of healthy users. And once Lemmy could rely on those, toxic ones wouldn’t be able to be toxic anymore (or be banned).
So they have all the incentive in the world to be awful until admin would decide that enough is enough.
As a healthy bunch, I think we should unblock all the trolls and report their posts one by one. On that note: removing posts is not good enough, the person in question should receive a warning.
If no action follows, we can advocate for clearer warning system and conditions for temporary/permanent bans.
I agree with lisko’s point (above) that some users will not be disciplined, but others will be, but i’m uncertain as to why some are considered the golden children. The problem users ive blocked aren’t disciplined by staff
This is one of the reasons beehaw exists, we are upset with the status quo of not actioning users because they don’t ‘technically’ violate the rules, but cause trouble for people. This is why our set of rules is so simplified and open to interpretation. We want there to be discussions around problematic users, and good faith to attempt to change behavior when someone is being problematic.
the usual reasons, friends, allies. the other reasons could be just there are non, and they just don’t like banning people who stay here, and are far more inclined to banning new accounts that are obvious trolls.

Report based on toxicity and not political disagreements right? because I think the stuff ya’ll spew is god awful and tinged with shocking amounts of callousness towards many peoples, but I’ve never reported any ya’ll.
due to your constant insults, you belong to the narrow circle of toxic, antisocial users
removed by mod
then, conversely, you shouldn’t have a problem if I insult you
If you insult me based on personal characteristics, go right on ahead. Insult the ideology, you will find yourself dealing with me, even if you ban this account, which is one of many
Do report me when you see me breaking the rules. I dare you
I don’t even know what you stand for politically, buddy and you probably don’t know about my beliefs either. So, eh? what is that about?
Wanna get to know me? welcome to my pm
Meanwhile speaking about you, Catradora_Stalinism, you appeared on modlog half a dozen times within just few days. May I ask why did you register on this instance if you break the rules so often?
Why so feisty??
I do not usually get like that, I assure you I am usually a demure, and pleasant little bug. People with liberal ideas, lets just say, grind my gears in a specific way. Having Covid doesn’t help my mood, which honestly I admit got quite out of hand.
To be completely honest, this is a second account to my main one. The other doesn’t work on some occasions and devices for some reason. This account was created to access lemmygrad, I just find myself seeing people saying things that give off big red flags before I go off to my friends in tankietown.
You’re number? Already? You boys move so fast these days! I may take up the offer, though, but despite what you may think, I would very much not like to blow up people’s personals with my ranting and raving. I barely even converse with friends on them!
Just to spell it outloud, the rule book doesn’t have an exception for its application in case “people grind your gears” or “you have a bad mood”.
how about try registering the third one on lemmygrad itself? I’m sure it’s gonna work much better this time. Also, it’s probably inconvenient for you to preview its riches from third party instance. Less chance of chewing on red flags in your gears as well
which I why I specified that exact fact.
I’m just fine where I am, although I may if circumstances show that is the best option
