Why tourism is evil?

It’s not

Tourists are obnoxious

No? That really depends on the person who’s traveling. Saying that all tourist are obnoxious is a fallacy.

What? Saying that saying that is a fallacy is a fallacy

I may have worded my comment erroneously. What I was trying to say is that not all tourist have to be, by definition bad people.

You are right and they aren’t “bad people”, they are just annoying ;)

Hmmm, most of them? Probably, (I live in a touristic place.) but not all. We can’t just generalise.

Listen, my mother was already annoying to begin with. As for myself, I have been a tourist many times and can confirm we are annoying.

I’m sorry but saying tourism is evil is a sad and narrow-minded statement. Travelling is inherent to life, exploration is an excellent human characteristic, and inter-cultural exchange is much much needed. It sounds like you got bothered by tourists and built that pessimistic view. Why not go travel, be a tourist yourself and broaden your worldview?

Now, there are less than ideal forms of tourism that can be very harmful, but the *evil *comes from behind that, usually, an unethical company wanting to profit.

Yeah. Tourists are annoying, and can kill your culture. But they pay the bills.

Depends on what the end goals are. If it is to generate tourism, of course.

And what do you mean by “evil”?

My guess here is “evil” is the ecological impact of travel. High CO2 outputs from aircraft and prolonged automobile travel.

The rebuttal is: take lower carbon impact travel options.

IMO, traveling is inevitable and, maybe, necessary. There are few other ways to experience a culture and understand a people without it.

But that’s a problem related to transportation in general. Not due to tourism. Aside from that we really need to switch out current ways of transportation to better, safer and clean ones.

But a country based on tourism is normally lacking a lot of support for their civilians.

Some countries try to seduce a lot of tourism making it a mess on local places, a lot of dirty, scams and drunk people (depends on which place).

An economy based on tourism is always bad for many, multiple things, like any future new pandemic or animals and insects invading places where they don’t have predators.

I live in one of those countries. I can confirm. Also not having a diverse economy can be a a big trouble. Obviusly an economy purely based on tourism would suck. But that does not make tourism itself bad. Traveling is an enriching experience.

Edit: fixed a typo.

It may be necessary for some economies, but otherwise it’s also inevitable. At the very least it must be tolerated

Tourism isn’t evil.

Tourism-centric economies that ignore the needs of local population to serve tourists and make money (… Therefore Capitalism) is evil. Car/plane centric infrastructure that greatly increases CO2 production (… Therefore Capitalism²) is evil.

Travel and tourism are, in and of themselves, positive and enriching, if you somehow divorce them from said capitalist forces.
