Got banned from /r/geopolitics after one of the mods saw that I frequented the chapotraphouse sub back when it was in its heyday. Vaguely remember him saying something about how “unserious” perspectives like a communist pov wasn’t allowed.

It’s probably worth noting that getting banned from Reddit means that the majority of Lemmy instances would likely ban you as well.

And to actually answer the question, I’ve never been banned.

Yes and also no, some things reddit bans for non-social commercial reasons, like sharing piracy links and content and DMCA. Lots of Lemmy instances are still able to let that fly effortlessly.

I got a 7day ban from reddit for posting pigpoopballs.jpg to someone. Hexbear has this as an emote.

When I appealed with the message “It’s a pig with poop on its balls” they raised it to a permaban.

I made a comment that news stories about Ukraine winning the war might not be realistic.

This got me banned from WorldNews

I never got banned.

What’s the most controversial thing you’ve said on there ?

Since I’m also in the never banned club, the most controversial thing I ever said on Reddit, based entirely on community reactions, was probably “americans perceive everyone outside america as sub-humans who are beneath self-determination, like they should be the ones to choose how we do everything”.

Sounds like at least among lefties this should have been an uncontroversial statement, but gods I made some gringos mad on that day.

Hah, only controversial to me for the mass generalization of a wide group of 300 million. There are absolutely many who see it that way, although also many millions who don’t.

The millions who don’t do not hold power.

Saying “Americans” might be a gross generalisation, but as long as your country acts like the planet’s collective abusive partner, I’ll just. Continue to shit on y’all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Never got banned, if fact I modded a handful of small subreddits, have basically made three posts in the past 5 years. The rest is just lurking on alternate front-ends on smaller news-like feeds.

(Some of us are here because we like Lemmy, not because of reddit ;-) )

I got banned from r/LateStageImperialism for saying “Holodomor”. I guess I can’t be anti-imperialism and anti-stalin but whatever.

I should also note that I’m an anarchist and a socialist, not a Marxist-Leninist.

Still going strong on my 15 years old account. I don’t really seek confrontation, so my comments are at most average.

Back in the day the CTH anti slavery thing managed to nab two accounts. Got some accounts nuked for piracy (got like 2 discord accounts hit for that RIP), had a family member that apparently was a reddit user too (didn’t learn this until many months later) and trolled a little too hard somewhere and we both ended up with an IP and ban-evasion ban.

Got banned for being a GDZ poster from some sub that somehow ended up being yet another site-wide ban, started using vpns, browser cookie games, etc around that time.

I remember in an IRC chat someone mentioning they try and avoid getting banned on a site because their dad used it too and would notice an IP ban. My parents barely even got into Facebook let alone other online communites.

My account never got banned, I just got tired of looking at political shit— especially at liberal/reactionary nonsense— every single day, so I deleted it and came over here, where we don’t put up with as much bullshit as we did over there.

I did get banned from a bunch of subs, though.

One of my favorite bans was when r/196 banned me for linking the whole Tank Man video under a “muh Tiny Moon Square” meme, which clearly shows the “Tank Man” leaving without so much as a scratch, a level of restraint that American police don’t show to anyone except to fascist wankers.

I didn’t get banned. Once I understood the user culture was changing, I found other places.

I didn’t get banned from Reddit. But my favourite communities did.

I got banned, but I don’t know why?

I didn’t use my account for a long time, because reddit is just bad and is only usable if you have questions to a specific topic, because a lot of people are there.

So after a while I had a specific question again and wanted to log in and a message like “Your account is temporarily blocked. If you don’t know what this means, type something in this edit field”. So I typed “I don’t know why I am banned?” into this field and after some weeks I got unbanned without even getting an email about it.

No idea why I was banned or why I was unbanned!?

Reddit and other big players are just banning people automatically. I read about some stories on Twitter and Instagram were the people didn’t know what they did wrong and got banned and they somehow lost their whole (online) existence, because for all other people you don’t exist anymore and move on. But after they survived the “shock” they say their lives are much better now.

Never banned. Purged previous accounts to start anew a couple of times. Plus I’m still there.
