lol…as if the US (i live in a territory) actually wants solar! What would the power companies do, if we adopted solar nationally?
That being said…my landlord made my building solar! I have $12 Luma bills now and NO POWER OUTAGES!!! I live in PR, where the electric grid fails pretty regularly. I am lucky.
My shower insight…until recently (when my building got solar) I had very high electric bills…to combat that, i stopped turning on the water heater…it took a while to adjust to…but now, my showers are faster (less water waste) and its better for you…and in my experience this is not a myth. I live in a constant warm climate and I am older…my skin is visibly healthier and my hair is softer…no expensive products…just cold water!
now, although my Luma bills are minimal(due to solar panels), I still do the cold showers, just for the “no-cost” skin care.
but more directly…people (who have it) love those water controls! I remember years ago “hooking up” with a guy in a fancy apartment. He invited me to use shower after, but implored me, “Whatever you do, don’t change my water temp setting!” I didn’t touch it, but it was my first time seeing anything like this…i remember thinking, “rich people don’t even have to adjust their water…they can even control and preset that!”
I agree. I know, this reply took a while. I was excited to join lemmy, as although I am not a believer in pure “communism”, i do lean progressively left. And I enjoyed it here for a long time…when the Russia/Ukraine war broke out…I got discouraged with all this pro-Putin posts…and it was obvious, if I tried to voice an opinion (like current Russia is absolutely not communist, but in fact the opposite end of spectrum), i would get bad mouthed and down voted to oblivion! Now…I understand the distaste to the West and especially the Us (i live in a US territory (PR), I understand the US behaves badly…on a very personal level even!) But that doesn’t mean every foe of the US is automatically good! Two opposing people can be both bad at the same time. Sigh…
Agreed…PR privatized our electric grid recently…we have more frequent power outages now and much higher electric bills, very bad situation for poor residents (of which two third of my island falls into). It’s not just the lack of lighting, most poor people who rely on electric power to refrigerate life saving drugs, keep getting screwed over with long periods of no electricity…and Luma is much more relentless with complety shitting power to late bill payers.
The only good thing of Luma coming to Puerto Rico…is that many places, including my low income apartment building, are transitioning to solar rapidly.
Im not sure what “leftist áreas” means exactly. I think honest questions with good intent are usually okay. You can learn without asking and curiosity done respectfully should be welcomed.
I have questioned people of other races then me about issues that I’ve heard and have always received positive and thorough responses.
I think some distros would work just fine for an average user, who typically only uses a web browser and office apps anyway. The only problem I see with Linux desktop is it’s not available (with few, usually higher end machines like system 76) pre-installed at a Best Buy. Most people think computers are “windows computers” or macs and have no idea other options exist.
I hope you are correct, sexy peaches! Honestly, i want to love peer tube…i just have a hard time with it right now.
PS…(if you remember me) i upgraded my x220 Thinkpad memory…i didn’t even need the article you shared with me…it was that easy! Yes, the machine is boxy and not glamorous, but something should be said when even I can upgrade an old machine into something pretty snappy for $100. I’m a Thinkpad user for life!
Eh…they kinda combined palm pilot with a cellphone. Used watered down macOs (aka…mostlty from permissive free licenced already there software)…but, they did work on a very pretty UI (that they actually made).
Apple’s revolution, in my mind, is their marketing department. They sure wrapped Unix in shiny and shinier boxes and learned how to rip off trendy people whilsed getting praised for “innovation”.
Just my useless 2 cents! Take it for what it’s worth.
Not this consumer. Choice is wonderful. Its partly why i love Linux. I hear talk of consolidation - but i think, short of making my own OS (which is possible and wonderful, if i wasnt lazy) there are so many options based on developer needs, i cam easily choose something fitting for…or choose two on different machines as i currently do.
Insofar as paid consumption (which i think you are referring to) choice keeps producers on point.
I guess an example, would be the things i cant choose…“Luma” the Canadian electric company that took over PR’s electric - I still consistently loose power several times a week and get bill imcreases, but there is nothing I can do, because i have no choice :(
I want to like peer tube, but as an old man, i find it impossible to navigate. Odyssey, seems, on the surface okay, until I’m bombarded with Trumper type people and their nonsensical content.
What i do, and don’t judge, is watch YouTube through the FreeTube app (invidious) in my defense, most of the YouTubers i follow, taught me how to do that, so i don’t feel guilty of ripping them off. There is one exception…there is a monthly YouTuber i watch that shows gay culture through the lense of old TV and movies …Matt Baum, and that makes me feel bad, but I really try to limit the reach of Google on my laptop.
I have a similar experience…i was shy when younger and still so. You remind of a job i worked in my 20’s, eventually i became friends with a coworker who told me: “I never thought we’d be cool - you seemed so snobby when you first arrived”
I’m truth, i was the exact opposite…i was shy. Unfortunately, i haven’t learned or got the courage to change that.
Resources. I have moved several cities in the US in the past, always with jobs or connections lined up…and that was hard. I have, in middle age, moved to a US Territory…which I’m starting to like (i have ok employment, especially for one with no Spanish)… But i would really like to actually leave the US. It’s hard for an average person. That reality aside…i would like to say something, i wish my younger self knew…take chances when you are young…go for it, you have so much time and energy to correct mistakes, don’t be afraid.
As an almost half century old man, my past regrets have everything to do with the the things I didn’t do and nothing to do with the stupid decisions I made…hopefully someone takes this advice.
I can’t speak for the Science stuff…but there is plenty FOSS communities that I enjoy. What are you subscribed too? When I scroll, i see plenty of FOSS posts…right now, it’s not as active as I would like, but I’ve been here less then a year and it is noticably better as time passes…just stick with it, spread the word and it can only get better. I do have to say though…when i found Lemmy, it was clearly advertised as a place for leftist, FOSS enthusiasts…so I don’t think (and hope) the leftist part will go away.
If this is for healthier weight…my answer is yes…but never again. It doesn’t help. Excercise is key - I’m not talking intense excercise, in my experience - simple things, like getting off the train a few stops before i need to and casually walking the rest of the way has helped my physical health drastically…but it also has greatly improved my mental health…whether it be the exercise or the fact that i leave earlier and no longer rush in order to get to where I’m going…who knows, but it has been very beneficial. I’m never groggy when i get to work now as I’ve had some “me time” with the extra walking. Oh yeah…and i dropped 20 pounds without “trying”.
This is so true…there have been many aging studies that show most people get required nutrients (even through bad food, excluding extremes) but water is vital and so many people don’t drink enough, plain and totally free water. Water does wonders…even for fatigue. Many people consume caffeinated beverages to help with fatigue and make matters worse through dehydration.
Thank you! That is a shame. I actually looked at PineTab…although very excited that we are finally have organizations willing to work on free hardware as well, right now, Pine just doesn’t offer options with the resources I want. I made this long without a tablet, maybe just wait for Pine to get more developed and then circle back
